What’s going on in the market?
For many years customers have relied on fixed WAN technologies such as MPLS. Whilst these technologies were perfectly adequate for connecting multiple remote locations back to one or more core sites, in the current world, traffic patterns have changed dramatically.
Previously, the vast majority of network traffic would have stayed “On-net”, and most users would have been connecting from fixed locations on the corporate network. The current expectation is that the majority (if not all) applications may be hosted “Off-net” in cloud service providers. In addition, Users are now hyper-mobile, with an expectation to be able to connect to their data and applications from anywhere, at any time via any device, whilst maintaining an appropriate security posture and delivering a superior user experience. In this environment, fixed and inflexible WAN services are no longer fit for purpose.

In addition to this, where the internet is used to deliver the underlay bandwidth, SD-WAN allows Direct Internet Access (DIA). That is to say that a user at a remote location can directly access internet based services, without the need to first transit the corporate WAN network.
SD-WAN also offers the ability to connect remote workers directly to the software defined fabric. SD-WAN can provide a “Cloud On-ramp capability which allows many cloud services (IaaS / SaaS, etc.) to directly connect to the software fabric, thus ensuring end to end quality of experience regardless of where either the user or the application are hosted.
