CIOs are coming to a sudden realisation: AI is moving too fast.

United Kingdom, Mar 17, 2026

Over the last few years, Artificial Intelligence has dominated the priorities of modern enterprises.

With that dominance established, more and more executives are pushing for faster AI adoption within their organisations to gain a competitive advantage.

But according to the research shown in our latest CIO report, the pace of AI adoption is exceeding governance speed limits! CIOs are quickly finding themselves up against one of the most tenuous challenges in technology leadership: "How do we scale AI initiatives quickly, while also safeguarding our organisation from the risks they present?"

Key stat: 78% of CIOs say they're not confident their organisation can scale AI

The chasm between AI-potential and AI-readiness

Many organisations have achieved impressive quick wins with AI and are eager to see more. As CIOs shift their attention to broader, more holistic AI initiatives, the gap between AI's potential and their organisation's readiness to utilise it becomes apparent. Suddenly, CIOs find themselves wading through operational issues, ethical considerations and regulatory risks - all new and constantly changing. Without proper governance in place to mitigate these factors, AI cannot work at scale.

Key stat: 85% of CIOs point to governance as a barrier to AI adoption within their organisation

AI runs while governance crawls

The reality is this: AI is evolving at a pace no technological achievement has ever before, and governance frameworks aren't moving fast enough to keep up. CIOs are going to find themselves trying to navigate:

  • Unclear decision-making authority
  • Gaps in skills and AI literacy
  • Fragmented accountability across different teams
  • Inconsistent and potentially shifting risk controls and policies
  • Limited visibility of all AI tools and services in use

AI is only going to become more autonomous and more interconnected with the systems and workflows we all use every day, meaning these challenges will only intensify if CIOs implement AI in a knee-jerk fashion.

Key stat: 78% of CIOs believe they don't have sight of all the AI tools being used business-wide

You need to slow down before you can speed up

AI is here to stay, and it will continue to reshape how organisations operate, innovate, and compete. But the CIOs have spoken: to achieve a true, sustainable AI advantage, organisations need more than just a slide deck and a dream. Enthusiasm is great and often welcomed, but it needs to be balanced by foresight to ask yourself:

  • Do we have a clear roadmap for where we're trying to get to and how we'll get there?
  • How do we create a strong governance framework that will support this initiative?
  • Is the business aligned with what we're using AI for and the outcome it will produce?
  • Do we have visibility of everyone involved and what they're accountable for?
  • Have we got the right skills and infrastructure in-house to support this initiative?
  • Does our leadership team value responsibility just as much as they value innovation?

Adopting AI for the sake of adopting AI is no longer a stance CIOs are prepared to take. The focus instead is on how effectively they can guide their organisations through that adoption phase and then achieve sustainable, long-term results.

Key stat: Despite the challenges it brings, 61% of CIOs are embracing AI
